Usually, after I’ve drawn and outlined a drawing, the color scheme is obvious. It’s just a part of my understanding of the drawing. When I did this one, though, I felt as though I didn’t have the technical skill to create a bewildering mix of colors this work required. Last week I saw this on my pile of drawings to color and I thought to myself, “Hey, I bet I could do that now.” And so here we are. Although I enjoy all of the coloring I do I have to admit this one was extra fun; I got to play with some unconventional color combos that are just skirting the edge of being awful but result in a pleasant sensation of visual twistedness.

As a note, I have tons of drawings from 2011 that I’m only now getting around to coloring. I think that since each drawing is a snapshot of my mind at the time the pencil hits the paper it’s more accurate to list the year as the year it was drawn. I usually color these pieces in a style that I was using at the time – as I normally imagine the color scheme at that point – but I suppose that this could end up making a timeline that shows inconsistent levels of skill. If historians ever decide that I’m worth their precious time to study then they’ll just have to deal with it. : P
