I think this drawing was trying to convey a sense of being overwhelmed. The title of the drawing is an homage to the early XTC song, “Senses Working Overtime.” While there’s no lyrical or symbolic connection between the two things other than the presence of the five senses, I think the song also nails the feeling of the drawing. The radio-friendly chorus of the song features the singer losing himself in the splendors of the senses and the verses inbetween contain a nervous anxiety about all of the stimulus coming at them; sort of like how the grotesqueness of the green hand is offset by the goofiness of the red man with the orange mustache.

I tried to use the colors in this drawing to add to the overall un-nerving feeling, but oddly enough, I think the color scheme turned out pretty conventional in the end. If you’ll notice, the complimentary colors are always side-by-side. The green hand is sandwiched between the red man and the red tongue; the woman in the purple dress is floating just above a space of yellow; the orangeness of the man’s mouth is offset by his blue skin and blue shirt. About the only real curve-balls are the gold and silver vertical eyeballs and the green woman who is distant from any source of red.
