The angel Clarence once said, “Remember, no man is a failure who has friends.” This particular angel wasn’t in the bible but rather the 1946 film “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Also, he nicked the quote from Mark Twain, so maybe I should I have started with that — but I figured a semi-divine figure held more weight. Maybe not.

I like that quote. On the first examination it makes it seem as if the bar to being a success is set pretty low but as I get farther into my adult life I realize this is not true. I’ve also spoken with other adults in my life — parents, co-workers, and associates — and it seems to be a pretty common consensus that a good friend is a pretty rare find. Society really encourages us to act selfishly and to only engage in actions that benefit ourselves. People are rewarded for using people for their own means and back-stabbing others who help them along the way. Over time, these negative actions can make a person become bitter, and raise their internal defenses even higher — but this only makes friendship more elusive.

So if you have managed to build and maintain a quality friendship then you’ve actually accomplished something. It might seem a little over-dramatic to use the word ‘accomplish’, but that’s because we pretend having friends is easy, and because the concept of friendship is so devalued at this point anyway. It’s nice to be able to think to yourself, hey, I have a few good friends — at least I’ve done something right.
